This is the outcome of the 70 hour KLEIST pitch. The subject was HEINRICH VON KLEIST, a popular yet mysterious writer and poet of the Romanticism age who died 200 years ago.

Around 40 cartoons were uploaded within the 70 hours, mostly new artworks in very different styles, mostly caricatures or portraits, but also funny cartoons and collages.
Juror Günther Emig, director of the Kleist Archives Sembdner in Heilbronn was very busy searching for his favorites and appreciated how many artists tried to “visualize” this one man, Heinrich von Kleist, the one who occupies Mr. Emig for years.

He couldn’t decide for 3 Kleist cartoons, so here are 6 picks with his comments (in random order):

"One of my favorites. Big eyes, the hair combed into the face, historical outfit. And a distinct style – even if I didn't recognize Heinrich at once."

"Very nice artwork. Unfortunately in those times, mail coaches were convertibles, and when they went uphill, you had to leave the coach or even push it. Heinrich would have liked it this way."

"One of my favorite illustrations, even if maybe arisen from a 1900's youth book. Yes, superb!"

Heinrich with a folder under his arm – no, it's a book – on his way to school. Brave guy."

Swiss artist Mattiello tells about how he developed his trademark style only a few years ago and about the differences between Swiss and German cartoon editors. [Interview in English and/or German]

[zur deutschen Version des Interviews]

Swiss artist Ernst Mattiello works for German newspaper Handelsblatt, among others. While Mattiello, born 1941, has been publishing cartoons since 1966, this wasn’t his main occupation until 2001. He had been working as an elementary school teacher for 40 years until he decided to become a full-time cartoonist.

Austrian publishing company Verlag der Apfel has just published an anthology of Mattiello’s cartoons. Adding to that, an exhibition of his works will take place in Solothurn, Switzerland between May 20 and June 11, 2011.

What was it like to work as a teacher and a cartoonist ? Was there any free time at all?

I mainly published cartoons reflecting on my work as a teacher in education journals. I mostly used the time assigned for preparation and wrap-up for my drawing.

There was a very vital interplay between the two occupations. The cartoonist supported the teacher, so to say – built him up, in a way. And vice versa. And, no, there wasn’t too much free time.

How has your style changed since 1966?

One of Mattiello's early cartoons (1966)

In the first few years my characters were very simplistic. At the same time they were heavy-handed and klutzy, not very accessible from an aesthetic point of view.
Later the characters would gradually become more pleasing. I would also use colors more lavishly. Unfortunately this wouldn’t always work well in terms of readability.
So, how did you develop your current style?

Only a few years ago. I was traveling in Vietnam with my wife and she had become very sick. I had lots of sleepless nights. During these nights I would brood over my work as a cartoonist. I had quit my job as a teacher a couple of years earlier and meanwhile my side job had become a full-fledged profession.

A pre-Vietnam cartoon (2006)

In Spring 2008 I was supposed to exhibit my works as a part of the Solothurn Literature Days. I decided to make this a test-run for a new style – with characters drawn in just a few strokes and spare use of colors. I wanted to minimize complexity in order to maximize the message.

I would say that the simpler characters allowed for a clearer view on the stories I want to tell in my cartoons. In a way I have returned to where I came from. But this time I have a better grasp on my characters.

Did you present your new style in that exhibition?

When I returned from Asia, I methodically tried to implement my findings. My current style – which, I am sure, is still subject to change – was at least partially visible in that exhibition’s cartoons. Both in the lines and the coloration.

There will be another exhibition in Solothurn on occasion of your 70th birthday. Will this be a kind of retrospective?

Only partly. The majority of the 70 works on disply is from the last four years. There are, however, five “remakes” of older cartoons that are very important to me.

What makes them important?

They are precursors to my current works, foreshadowing them in their laconicism.

You are a Swiss citizen but you also work for German newspapers like Handelsblatt. Are there any significant differences between Swiss and German newspapers?

A 2009 Cartoon

In German newspapers there is still room for cartoons and caricatures. In Swiss media the space that used to be reserved for cartoons is almost entirely taken over by editorials.

The few Swiss editors who still care about drawn stories tend to expect the cartoonist to express his interpretation of a story, his version. German editors, on the other hand, tend to already have an idea about how the story should be interpreted and will choose the cartoon that’s closest to their own interpretation.

This is, of course, a very subjective assessment and might not bear up to any objective examination…

Which of the two suits your own approach to cartoons better?

Assignments always are fun. As long as I can identify with the content of a task it’s not important whether the editor takes an “opinion approach” or an “illustration approach”.

Of course it’s more fun when you are approached as an author and not just as someone providing a service.

Thanks for your time!

Here are some of the photos taken at the opening of the toonpool.com exhibition in Izmir on Friday, October 15, 2010.

Great news, everyone: toonpool.com proudly presents “A Smile Goes ‘Round the World / Bir Gülümseme Dünyayı Dolaşıyor”, an exhibition of cartoons by toonpool.com artists from all over the world. The exhibition will take place in Izmir, Turkey between October 15 and 29, 2010 (scroll down for more detailed information & click here for some photos taken at the opening ceremony). This is an interview with charming Menekşe Çam who made all of this possible.

Menekşe, it’s so exciting that there will be a toonpool.com exhibition in Izmir. Can you tell me how this came into being?

In fact, my husband first brought up the idea of a joint exhibition when we visited Berlin in late January. I mentioned the idea in the interview I gave back then and got very positive responses. I really want to thank Bernd Pohlenz for trusting me with the organization of the first toonpool.com exhibition in the “real world”.

Of course I also have to thank all the artists who agreed to join the exhibition and sent in their cartoons. Finally, there is the people at the BKM (Buca Municipality Cultural Center) who agreed to host the exhibition and gave us all the things we needed. Organizing this took a lot of time – more than three months. And it took a lot of hard work.

So, what is the general idea of the exhibition?

First of all, it’s a wonderful cultural event that puts the works from a great cartoon community on display for the first time. Second, the exhibition shows that this community can act together when necessary.

There is no profit in this event apart from spiritual pleasure and artistic prestige. Still, I hope that we can repeat this exhibition in other countries – after all, our slogan is “Toonpool.com – A Smile Goes ‘Round the World”

Buca Municipality Cultural Center

How many artists will be on display in Izmir?

It was really hard to choose between more than 80,000 artworks by almost 2,000 artists from 160 nations. In the end we had to settle for 58 cartoons by 58 artists from almost as many different countries. Among the artists on display are Matteo Bertelli from Italy, Pawel Kuczynski from Poland, An Yong Chen from China, Ernst Mattiello from Switzerland, and Xavier Salvador from Spain..

What kind of cartoons did you choose for the exhibition?

Mostly they were chosen from among the most popular cartoons on toonpool.com – the ones with the greatest number of votes and comments. Some of them are political, some funny, and some thought-provoking. There will be a catalogue, too.

An Earlier Exhibition at BKM

Will some of the artists be present at the opening ceremony?

Yes, Buca Municipality will host ten artists in a hotel on the seaside – for two nights and three days. This includes accommodation, breakfast, and dinner. There are still some free spots.. artists who sent in their work and would like to spend a spend a weekend vacation in Izmir should just contact me.

Thanks for your time, I am really looking forward to seeing the photos taken at the grand opening!

German Cartoonist OL talks about his cartoons, his upcoming exhibition "60 Jahre OL", and about his hometown Berlin. (Interview in German)

… was sind OLomaten?

Wieso bist du dann schließlich doch wieder hierher gezogen?

Fantastic Four) sowie Zeichner wie Art Spiegelman (“Maus”) und Ben Katchor (“The Jew of New York”).

Was genau wurde denn verändert?

Berlin-based artist Meikel Neid has lent his art to a political cause: the introduction of a basic income guarantee. I asked him some questions about political art, propaganda, and about what topics are acceptable for a political cartoon.

I’ve always liked Meikel Neid’s rough and very hand-made looking style. Something about the edgy and weirdly unstable outlines tells me that his cartoons take longer to draw than you would expect. This Friday, February 12, an exhibition of his works will open in Berlin. It is tied to a political campaign endorsing the introduction of a Basic Income Guarantee (see the interview for more details). While I remain skeptical about the concept, I thought it interesting to talk to an artist who has lent his work to a political cause. This is an interview about political art.

UPDATE: photos added. see page 2

Meikel, starting on February 12 some of your cartoons will be on display as part of an initiative called “Illustrating Basic Income Guarantee“… Could you briefly describe what this is all about?

Well, the basic concept of BIG is to provide each person in this country with a certain amount of money without imposing any further conditions. This means you don’t need to provide any proof that you are eligible and you are not required to take a job that you can’t do or don’t want to do. Of course there are different ideas about the extent of this unconditional income.. but the main idea is that people must be able to meet their basic needs.

“Illustrating Basic Income Guarantee” was initiated by [Berlin-based artist and politician] Annette Köhn. She asked me to contribute a couple of cartoons. I drew a small number of cartoons especially for the exhibition but the majority will be cartoons that just are somewhat political, socio critical .. or, well, not political at all.

So.. is Basic Income Guarantee a concept that you personally support?

Yes. I mean, I don’t think that everybody should receive 1,500 Euros per month so they won’t have to do anything at all. But it’s a good thing to take pressure and repressions off of people living on welfare.

Is it harder to do a cartoon on an issue that you support than on something you oppose?

No. Not really … When you are drawing a political cartoon you take your own opinion and then all you need to do is find the opposite to this opinion and build your cartoon around it.

In a way your cartoons could be considered “political art”, right?

Yes.

What do you think of political art?

That’s a bit tricky.. one of the disadvantages of political paintings, cartoons, etc. is that, as an artist, you need to get involved with the topic. Which isn’t always a pretty thing to do. You’re likely to get in a bad mood when you’re studying political topics. Of course artists at least get the satisfaction of creating something out of this mess.

Then, you also need to consider your audience. How complex can a political cartoon be while still being comprehensible? There are so many people who don’t care about politics. As an artist you sometimes feel a bit lost.

Is it possible to draw a line between political art and propaganda?

Nah… I don’t think I would draw such a line. Doing political cartoons in a way is promoting a cause that’s important to you or that you have been thinking about.

When doing political cartoons, how far can you go? How ‘mean’ can you be as an artist?

I don’t think there are any topics where you can’t be mean. You should be able to make jokes about everything. There are great cartoons about death, for example – cartoons that are completely tasteless but hilarious anyway.

… but “death” is not exactly a political topic..

Well, considering political topics, things get complicated as soon as you attack someone personally. I would rather draw a cartoon against Christianity than against Islam. I don’t really know why, though. Probably because I know Christianity better.

As for jokes directed at politicians.. in most cases they deserve it. If you enter politics and try to reach a high position you should expect criticism. If you can’t deal with that, you’re in the wrong place.

Are there any politicians that you respect so much that you wouldn’t make fun of them?

Not really. Jokes needn’t be vicious, after all. Sometimes amazing people have attributes or quirks that are funny. It’s absolutely OK to use that for a cartoon.

Thanks for your time!
