Like all holiday-themed cartoons, Easter cartoons are somewhat tricky. On one hand, there is a huge demand for them. Artists can’t afford to miss such an opportunity. On the other hand it’s quite hard to come up with an original idea when one third of the world’s population hast been plastered with eggs and bunnies in all possible kinds of variations since the late nineteenth century. It’s not impossible, though. Here are nine great Easter cartoons.

I would like to close with a list of Easter-themed gags that perhaps have been used a little too frequent. Who knows, maybe this list will make a difference for next year’s Easter cartoon glut.

1) Anything of the incongruity of bunnies and eggs, i.e. bunnies hatching from eggs, laying eggs or, heaven forbid, making out with chicken

2) Bunnies breaking the law in order to get their eggs

3) Chicken laying colored eggs

4) Any feud between Santa and the Easter Bunny

5) Zombie-Jesus

Happy Easter!

Last week on toonpool.com (March 28 – April 3 2010) http://blog.toonpool.com/cartoon-reviews/last-week-on-toonpool-com-march-28-april-3-2010/ http://blog.toonpool.com/cartoon-reviews/last-week-on-toonpool-com-march-28-april-3-2010/#comments Sun, 04 Apr 2010 23:41:31 +0000 Paul http://blog.toonpool.com/?p=2450 Happy Easter, everyone! As you might have guessed, there have been plenty of egg-, bunny-, and crucification-themed cartoons over the last few days. As usual with recurring events, there is a stock of easter themed gags that will pop up each year. There’s bunnies stealing eggs, bunnies laying eggs or hatching from eggs, and the occasional Santa Claus. I am getting a little tired of these cartoons so here are some that avoid bunnies: there’s  “Angry God”, “Sponsoring in Spanish Easter Processions”, “Eggs Benedict”, and “Easter 2010 B.C.”. The last one is prone to make historians and palaeontologists weep, but it’s nicely drawn.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to Turkey wasn’t really Easter related. Then again, these days nothing is not Easter-related. Most cartoons emphasize the meeting’s potential for conflict which, admittedly, had been instrumentalized by both Merkel and Erdogan (here, here & here).

Introducing…

Evandro Alves is a promising new toonpool.com member from Brazil. Of his cartoons, I liked “standing ovations for a snake charmer” best. Note how the lower left part of the audience seems to be mesmerized by something outside of the panel, perhaps a giant video screen. I also liked the “smoker’s trophies” – reminded me of a skater I used to be friends with who kept his broken boards. Although the trophies in the cartoon are probably supposed to be his family’s lungs. The “Noah’s arc” one is a bit moralizing too, but it has animals with gas masks. And they look cute.

Cartoons of Interest

I can’t really tell why I like this cartoon by Mattiello. It’s about easter and dangereous eggs and it makes great use of the white space and vectorized color fields.
