Could be my non-alpine background or my mild indifference towards most kinds of sports. Anyway, even though there is a relatively recent collection on Olympic Games on toonpool.com , it isn’t specifically about Vancouver – lots of Usain Boltses and Chinese human rights violations. Here’s what I found on Vancouver: there’s this one on a lack of snow in Canada (is this still an issue?) and this one on a lack of snow in Ethiopia. There’s a figure skater, a nordic walker,  a luger, and a reminiscence to Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili, whose tragic death overshadowed the Olympic sledding competitions. German artist Erl used the Olympics to comment on German Foreign Minister Westerwelle’s most recent rants and of course there are cartoons about doping: here, here & here. (OK, I am not really sure what the last one is about. Could be about Belgium for all I know). Finally there’s a visionary prototype for the far end of the ranking.

Another interesting thing I noticed is that toonpool.com member Lucido5 has put up a collection about what he calls “strange coincidences, paranormal phenomena and extragalactics simil+(r)arities.” It’s about cartoons that look similar to other cartoons. While I think that it’s a good thing somebody takes the time to protocol such similarities in cartoons from all over the world, I am kinda put off by the Lucido’s statement that the collection is “not about allegations [and] only [a] warning note”.  A warning from having similar ideas? Is he going to break my legs next time I have the same idea as him? Still, it’s fun to browse the collection. As a bonus meta-joke, he seems to have lifted half of it from another member’s collection on cartoon similarities.

Cartoons of Interest

My favourite cartoon this week is “Father-Son Bonding 2″ by Age Morris. It shows one of those special moments between two generations of men and it’s boldly colored. The position of the captions perfectly visualizes the pace of action in this otherwise static pictures. I also love speculating about where dad got this rumor from.

I would also like to mention this one by Mark Lynch, since I have always found myself struggeling with those unwritten rules.

If you have some time on your hands, you should check out Zardoyas’ gallery – especially his black-and-and white illustrations. Here are some of my favourites: 1,2,3,4.
