He has contributed over a thousand of these images since he joined toonpool.com in early 2008. Alex holds a university degree in Art Education and currently works as an illustrator and graphic designer in Havana, Cuba.

Alex, I find it hard to decide whether your works are cartoons or rather illustrations. Where do you see the difference between the two?

In some cases, the distinction is clear. Take, for example, charts and graphs in scientific books – medical ones, architectural ones, etc. They meet requirements that a cartoon couldn’t. Commercial illustration has evolved a lot over the last fifty or sixty years, especially in package and product design. There has been a development in cartoons, too, but it has been more limited.

You could say that illustration is more of a commercial activity . You create something in order to sell it – like posters or magazine covers. The special quality about cartoons is that they contain a definite and explicit narrative. And they often communicate a strong social opinion to a wider audience.

So you think they are two separate things?

I see many points of contact between the two. They are both visual media created for the masses – but this issue is hotly debated with passion on both sides. Personally, I see more contact points than differences. My friend, American illustrator Randy Enos summarized the differences and/or similarities between cartoon and illustration like this:

If you draw a political picture of a duck and you label it “duck”, then you’re a cartoonist.
If you draw a political picture of a duck and you don’t label it “duck”, you’re an illustrator.
If you’ve made a funny cartoon duck for the cover of Time magazine, you’re an illustrator.
If you’ve made a funny cartoon duck for the cover of MAD magazine, you’re a cartoonist.
If you’ve made a funny cartoon duck for the cover of the New Yorker, you’ve made a “drawing” not a cartoon or an illustration.*

So, you see, it all has to do with ducks.

Obviously.

My point is that there are cartoons that look like illustrations and vice versa. My own works fall into that category. Sometimes something that starts as a caricature turns out to be an illustration…

Some of the most memorable of your “pictogram” cartoons are about condoms. In fact, there are a lot of them. Is there something special about condoms for you?

Well, not really. I have also drawn a series of cartoons on bar codes, for example. But condoms are important! They are widely used all over the world. They have existed for a long time and they are used by all social classes. They have saved and are saving millions of lives, preventing sexually transmitted diseases and they help in family planning. I think they deserve a great monument. In fact, I would like to publish a book with a selection of cartoons about condoms. Can you help me?

I don’t know… It sure sounds like something for the toonpool.com community… But, anyway… there are a few cartoons of yours that differ from your “pictogram style” (e.g. this one). What’s the story behind these?

Sometimes I will sketch out an idea and notice that it works better with vectors. Other times I will aim for something a more expressive, giving the line a leading role. Using both techniques work well for me. The drawing to which you refer was a pencil drawing I did as a sketch. Then I put in a little color and left just like that. Actually this doesn’t have much to do with the things I usually do.

You mentioned your friendship with Randy Enos.. I was wondering: Does the United States embargo against Cuba affect the way Cuban cartoonists and illustrators interact with artists from the rest of the world?

I do not think the embargo has directly affected our ability to make our work known to people from other parts of the world – thanks to technology. We also receive visits from foreign artists including Americans. But the embargo affects us when it comes to marketing our work to the United States or when we want to travel to that country.

Thanks for your time!

Lifelong Learning http://blog.toonpool.com/events/lifelong-learning/ http://blog.toonpool.com/events/lifelong-learning/#comments Thu, 24 Sep 2009 12:22:08 +0000 Paul http://blog.toonpool.com/?p=1061 These days, toonpool.com artist Kittihawk’s first cartoon anthology will be published by Lappan Verlag. The book contains about 90 cartoons on 64 pages and they are all funny. I kid you not. I met Kittihawk in Berlin to ask her a couple of questions about her art and about the book.

IMG_0167_croppedKittihawk, you started drawing cartoons only in 2005 and now  you got your first anthology published. The book is called “Lebenslanges Lernen” (Lifelong Learning) -  Did you learn anything in these four years of doing cartoons?

Yes, definitely. I always notice this when looking at my first cartoons: sometimes I don’t even think they’re funny anymore.  Over time, you discover how you have to tell a story to make it funny. I’m better at that now, but I’m still learning new stuff. I am really interested in the different ways of telling a story.

I originally wanted to ask you about why most of your works are black and white, since most of your stuff on toonpool.com is. Then I noticed that there are lots of colored cartoons in your book.

Well, actually I think I really like black and white cartoons better. They have a kind of beautiful sternness to them. I only started using color a year ago, partly, because everyone does it. In a lot of cases, I don’t think that it’s necessary to use color and I really don’t like cartoons that look as if they have been colorized. Who knows, maybe colored cartoons will be out of fashion again in a couple of years.

Most jokes in  your cartoons would work without an elaborate setting, but I noticed that you sometimes draw really detailed backgrounds. For example, I really liked all the small background items in the revised “phone-sex Nazi” cartoon. In what situations do you decide on doing these backgrounds?

Sometimes you need to place the action of the cartoon in a distinct setting to make the joke work. In other cases this is not crucial, but I still like to situate the cartoon somewhere. Some artist leave out settings altogether, but this also means a lack of ambience that readers can recognize and relate to. I really like it when you get the sensation of being in another place when looking a cartoon. That’s also something I really appreciate about other artists.

Do you try out different backgrounds for a cartoon?

Yes: often I will think of a joke and draw a background. Then I’ll notice that there is too much stuff in the background and have to remove it. Since I only work digitally, I can try out different things.

I noticed that people writing about you will often point out how you’re a woman doing a job that’s dominated by men – this is repeated in your press kit and even in the introduction to your book. What do you think about this?

I asked them not to emphasize this, but everybody does it. This happens with other female artists as well, it’s a kind of a cliché. It’s the same with reports about Angela Merkel: They often put an emphasis on her being  woman working in a field that’s usually male. Maybe it’s natural that this is the first thing that people notice, but it’s sad when they don’t go on from there. It’s important to me not to me labeled as “woman cartoonist”, male artists don’t draw “men cartoons” either. We all interact with both men and women. Making up a “women cartoons” category is stupid.

Thanks for your time!

For those of you living in Berlin: An exhibition of Kittihawk’s cartoons will open on Friday, September 25 2009 at Cartoonfabrik Berlin (Krossener Straße 23, Friedrichshain). You are all invited to celebrate the opening & Kittihawk’s new book “Lebenslanges Lernen”. Doors open at 8 PM.

If you can’t make it or don’t live in Berlin or Germany, you should consider buying the book or try to get a free copy:

Win a signed copy of Kittihawk’s book “Lebenslanges Lernen” – just send an e-mail to [email protected] & put “Kittihawk” in the subject field. (any recourse to courts of law is excluded).

News on IRAN http://blog.toonpool.com/uncategorized/news-on-iran/ http://blog.toonpool.com/uncategorized/news-on-iran/#comments Fri, 14 Aug 2009 16:23:44 +0000 Max http://blog.toonpool.com/?p=812 Ahoy,

toonpool.com and stern.de (website of Germany’s most read news magazine “Stern” with 15 million monthly visitors) are deeply in sympathy and support for the artists in Iran who have declared to refuse joining the 9th Tehran Cartoon Biennale (prizes of 132,000 Dollars overall at last Tehran Biennale).

News website stern.de has now announced the courageous initiative of the Iranian artists in an article to circularize it for a huge public:

Please support the Iranian cartoonists! Tell your friends about the initiative. See the statement in the toonpool.com Blog

Statement of Iranian cartoonists on the 9th Tehran Cartoon Biennale http://blog.toonpool.com/politics/statement-of-iranian-cartoonists-on-the-9th-tehran-cartoon-biennale/ http://blog.toonpool.com/politics/statement-of-iranian-cartoonists-on-the-9th-tehran-cartoon-biennale/#comments Sun, 09 Aug 2009 14:03:16 +0000 toonpool http://blog.toonpool.com/?p=725 By iran cartoonist

Source: http://www.toonpool.com/cartoons/Iran_53474

The recent presidential election in Iran and its aftermath found huge international coverage and attention.
As you may know, there was a huge and unprecedented turn-out in balloting, which was a sign of the Iranian people’s will to reform the current situation of the country. But the aftermath of the election was so desperately annoying that no free soul can ever close his eyes on it.
The same is true for the cartoonists. They have always accompanied people in portraying pains and in offering criticisms, in denouncing violence and in promotion of justice; and they have always called for peace. The same is true for the time being. The cartoonists feel an obligation to stand by people who have faced such unkindness.
We the cartoonists have always tried to laugh people out of pain and pressure. But how can one witness killing of brothers and sisters and still remain silent?
In such a situation, the 9th Tehran cartoon Biennale is on the way. Due to the post-election events, the cultural joy has totally disappeared from Iranian society. So we don not see any real interest in holding such a Biennale. In the current situation, we see our responsibility in a different perspective which does not necessarily include laughing and making laugh.
Due to this fact, we the undersigned cartoonists, declare that we would not participate in this international festival. Previously, the festival has been held by cooperation and sympathy of professional Iranian cartoonists but this time, we would not cooperate or participate.

Currywurst – Cartoon Contest http://blog.toonpool.com/cartoons/currywurst-cartoon-contest/ http://blog.toonpool.com/cartoons/currywurst-cartoon-contest/#comments Wed, 05 Aug 2009 15:07:08 +0000 Battlestar http://blog.toonpool.com/?p=606 toonpool.com is looking for the most funny, witty and beautiful ‘CURRYWURST CARTOON’! You can also draw an illustration! Beautiful implies: positive – for the keen fans of this dish! Berlin may also play a role (but doesn’t have to).

Reason for our contest is the foundation of the “GERMAN CURRYWURST MUSEUM” which will be opened on August 28th, 2009 – and the 60th anniversary of the day when the currywurst was invented on September 4th, 1949 in Berlin. The museum is located near famous Checkpoint Charlie with thousands of tourists visting this area every day.

The GERMAN CURRYWURST MUSEUM promises its visitors exciting scenes and a glimpse of history – combined with information about recipes, ingredients and origin. The stage is set for the most diverse aspects of the popular Currywurst, of which around 800 million portions are consumed in Germany every year. As an urban snack with a cult following, the “curried fried sausage” has many friends and fans who have a word to say about it in the exhibition’s photo and audio documents.

Starting this summer, the GERMAN CURRYWURST MUSEUM will welcome locals and visitors to Berlin under the address Schützenstrasse 70. The multi-media monument to Germany’s traditional snack creation is located in direct proximity to Checkpoint Charlie. The representative exhibition covers an area of 1.100 square metres including catering and shop.

Best entries of our contest will be presented in the museum (and maybe on t-shirts or postcards).

Wonderful, thank you so far!! Keep them coming til the 28th of August!

——————————————————————————————————————–

Alternative recipe from David Baldinger‘s kitchen in Greensburg/USA, a typical American way of food pleasure! Many thanks David!!!

David: I’ve never had currywurst. It looks disgusting enough that I would probably like it. My favorite is to cook sausage in sauerkraut. I brown the sausage heavily so the sauerkraut will pick up the flavor. I like to cook it until the sauerkraut starts turning brown. Generally, I prefer to use Gundelsheim Barrel Sauerkraut and beer bratwurst. I don’t add anything else. God, I love Gundelsheim pickles! I have to stop thinking about all of this! I am starting to go crazy!

Disgusting But SOOOO Good!

english version

The cartoon »new mac book« is cruel, it hits a whole class of society: in your face. It questions all the values Steve Jobs is representing; this cartoon pulls the legs of all owners of those peculiar white and silver foldable things in the fancy quarters of the metropoles.

»Wow! They look so much better (and faster) on your new MacBook!« If you’ve heard this sentence before at Starbucks, in a design academy or in between some black shirt nerds, sitting in the shades of trees in summer, you just know two head movements: either you shake your head (“And where do you play ‘Farcry’, my mac friend?”) or you nod (“Oh yes, those new macs are sky-rocketing with the new ‘Core 2 Duo’ architecture”).

To have the apple “on it” or not: it seems that this is the most important question in some of the standardized artist and shopping quarters around the world. Those shiny white and silver thingies fit perfectly into the world of private clinics, noble malls and DJ desks and radiate excruciating exclusiveness and entrepreneurism where no one is. The one who wears apple on XING meetings will probably be hugged on facebook and followed on twitter instantly. A special understatement utters the one who drives up with a black Saab which is tagged with the enclosed white Apple sticker. The sticker drives even more positively on a 106-inch “smart” car – that’s the climate preserving roundhouse kick which rushes into your face, asking you how black your carbon fingerprint is by now.

In »new mac book«, the clean machine is not to be spared from the worst: as an inactive and dull thingy, it has to stand the copulation process of two filthy dogs on it, as if it was the classy suede backseat of grandma’s Cadillac. The MacBook has been reverted in its meaningfulness: from a device of modern, clean virtuality to a camping mat of archaic, physical fertilisation.

Andy Leuenberger’s fantastic cartoons are modern sociological meditations mixed with PC philosophy, served in his individual ‘corporate identity’, black on white paper with red shading. There’s just one question: is The Leuenberger using a Mac?

deutsche Version

»Wow!
