As you may have noticed, we added a new language: from now on, toonpool.com will be available in Italian, too. If you follow our newsletter, you may also know, that we have a new member on our team. Dieter Wiesner, an expert in business- and talent management has signed a contract with us on Monday. Among others, Mr. Wiesner has been Michael Jackson’s personal manager beginning in 2002.
The erruption of Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull on Wednesday has pretty much put all European air travel to a halt. Which, in turn has led to the creation of numerous cartoons. There are cartoons that discuss the real powers behind the smoke clouds (either German railways, German air traffic controllers, or former German chancellor and avid menthol smoker Helmut Schmidt), cartoons that wonder about the effects on the environment (either positive or negative), cartoons that draw the connection between smoke and smoking (in English, in German, and without words), cartoons that play down volcanos as such (here and here), and cartoons that just won’t fit into the other categories (diverted birds and a volcano at a bar).
Introducing…
Paco Sanjuán is from Alicante, Spain. Although he does classic cartoons (1,2) and illustrations (1) as well, most works he has contributed so far are caricatures. While his caricatures may not always bear perfect likeness to their subjects, he has a distinct talent for colors and composition. I really liked his Norbert Biskyesque Wayne Rooney, his iconic Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi of the Golden Ball. Also be sure to take a look at Lauren Bacall and Boris Karloff as The Monster. And notice the similar expression in their eyes.
Cartoons of Interest
This week, my favorite cartoon is “Konsensgesellschaft” (“Society of Consensus”) by German artist Bernd Zeller. It’s about an alternative to all our indistinct fears. The caption reads: “Living with dragons ain’t too bad. At least you know what you’re afraid of.”
I also would like to point out two series of images. The first one is by German cartoonist Badham who has done a few variations on public bathrooms (here, here, here, and here). The second is a series of very blurry caricature paintings by Allan McDonald (here, here, here, and here).
And, of course, there’s Chairman Neuman.
