Last Week on toonpool.com (November 1-7, 2010)

Introducing…

Viacheslav Bibishev AKA BIB is an editorial cartoonist from Russia. He has a viaried style that includes some impressive cross-hatching, simpler line drawings, as well as digital colorization. As usual with editorial cartoons from other countries, I am only getting about half of them (these two, for example, remain a mystery to me). But I really like the way they are done – the cross-hatching, but also the composition as a whole – and I hope to learn a bit more about Russia in the weeks to come.

Sebreg‘s real name is Sebastien Millon and he is based in Phoenix, Arizona. According to his profile on toonpool.com he draws rabbits and bears and is kind of an awesome person. While I have no further information about his awesomeness he does draw rabbits and bears. Some of his pieces are illustrations rather than cartoons (1, 2 & 3), some tell little stories (1 & 2). I, too, think that it would be awesome to live in a giant bear and I like to refer to my old interview on “cuteness” once again because Sebreg’s style fits in there nicely.

Cartoons of Interest

A cartoon about the effects of Tuesday's midterm elections in the United States

Another midterm cartoon, showing the chief executive after the storm (or war)

A surreal drawing of mythical Medusa. I really like the structure of her hair

A cartoon by Bernd Pohlenz who happens to be my boss. It's a great cartoon, too.

This is something C. D. Friedrich could have painted, had he lived in the Amazon Basin

I like the way Italian artist Matteo Bertelli uses perspective in this cartoon

Personal Favorite

My favorite cartoon is a caricature of Vittorio Emanuele II, first king of Italy by Achille Superbi. The portrait won first prize in some contest and it definitely deserved it - for the idea of depicting Italy as a uniform falling apart at the seams but mostly for the mustache and hairdo.
